Motor drive controller are electronic devices the are used to regulate torque, motor speed and position output. The drive is able to alter the input power into the motor and achieve the desired output or result. These are mostly used in motor interfacing. The terms stepper motor controller and motor drive are frequently used interchangeably.
There are mainly four types of motor drive and controller. They are AC, DC, stepper and servo. Let us discuss each of them in detail.
AC motor drives and controller are electronic devices that can change the frequency of the power received by a motor. This way it can modify the input power going into the motor to achieve a high output torque and speed. Its key specifications are drive operating mode, loop system voltage, inverter type, and communication interface.
In DC motor drives and controller, the constant current source is altered to direct current output of different pulse frequency or duration. Key specifications, in this case, include drive operating mode, voltage classification, motor type, power rating, communication interface and loop system.
Servo motor drives and controller are electronic devices that can achieve varying current output by adjusting the constant current source. Here, the key specifications are motor types, output signal type, drive operating mode and communication interface.
Here the constant current source is adjusted to a“stepped” output current. These are used in motion control applications in construction and manufacturing. It is also used to control torque, motor speed and position.
The selection of the motor drive circuit depends on the type of motor to be used.
The DC motor drive consists of a controller, a motor driver circuit or a motor driver IC, the motor to be used and a power supply unit. Let us discuss each component in details.
