High-power TP PFC controllers that meet challenging efficiency standards

Onsemi offers the latest mixed signal controllers, dedicated to bridgeless TP PFC topologies. Based on the success of the NCP1680, which is ideal for designs up to 350W, the new controller turns on power capability to the kW range. NCP1681 is designed for ultra high density offline power supplies

In the past, TP PFC designs required the use of microcontrollers, which increased the complexity of design and the necessity of coding. A full-featured TP PFC solution requires only a small number of external components and no additional coding, saving time, cost, and space.

Commenting on the new release, Robert Tong, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Computing and Cloud at Onsemi, said, "The new NCP1681 extends the benefits of a code-free TP PFC design to higher capabilities. This enables our customers to continue to improve design efficiency while reducing design time and cost to quickly bring solutions to market."

It can be configured to work in fixed-frequency CCM or multi-mode operation, where the controller naturally switches between CCM and CrM for optimal performance across power levels.

The new high-power TP PFC controller combines established control algorithms with novel elements to provide high performance and low cost TP PFC solutions. In addition, it can meet challenging efficiency standards such as "80Plus" or "CoC Tier 2", which require high efficiency over a wide load range.

Under the high pressure line, TP PFC solutions will achieve close to 99% efficiency. The new device is suitable for high power supplies in the 350W to several kilowatts range for general purpose power inputs (90-265VAC) for a wide range of applications including servers, high performance computing, telecommunications, industrial and OLED TVS.
