Low Voltage Buck Converter Design for High Power Density Vehicles

Technology Cover
Post Date: 2022-05-25, Diodes Incorporated

Diodes Incorporated introduces the automotive-compatible diode AP61300Q and Diodes AP61302Q synchronous buck converters. They are optimized for use in vehicle telematics, ADAS, power and infotainment systems, and instrument clusters. These 3a grade devices offer a wide input voltage range of 2.4V to 5.5V and meet the needs of automotive pols that are more streamlined and show improved efficiency levels.

These buck converters include a 70mOhm high-side power MOSFET and a 50mOhm low-side power MOSFET, which together provide high-efficiency step-down DC-DC conversion. Due to the support of fast switching speed, smaller accompanying passives can be selected, reducing the overall BOM and saving space.

Their LDO mode allows output voltage regulation to be maintained as the input voltage approaches the VOUT voltage. Additionally, depending on the load conditions, the device can be configured for PFM or PWM operation (using an enable pin). In PFM mode, its quiescent current (IQ) is 19µA, which maintains high efficiency even at light loads.

Since both devices feature COT control, easy loop stabilization, fast transient response, and low output voltage ripple can be achieved with minimal external components. Therefore, the PCB area that needs to be allocated is greatly reduced, and the overall production cost is reduced.
