Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, announces the MLX9042x family, a new addition to its 3D magnetic position sensing solutions. Designed for cost-conscious automotive customers, this family of sensor chips can accurately and safely measure absolute position in harsh, noisy environments and over a wider temperature range.

The solution is primarily aimed at automotive customer applications, including powertrain actuators, transmission sensors, pedal position sensors, and chassis sensors. Industrial customers will also benefit from the functional improvements they bring.

Based on Melexis' pioneered Triaxis® Hall sensor technology, the MLX9042x devices incorporate analog signal conditioning, data conversion, signal processing, and output stage drivers.

This family of devices includes:

MLX90421: Provides analog or PWM output, supports rotary and linear position sensing.

MLX90422: Provide SENT output, support rotary and linear position sensing.

MLX90423: Provide analog, PWM or SENT output, support stray field immunity.

MLX90425: Provides analog or PWM output, supports 360° rotation for stray field immunity.

MLX90426: Provides SENT output and supports 360° rotation for stray field immunity.

 More models will be added to the series in the future.

The performance of the MLX9042x family is similar to the MLX9037x family, ensuring first-pass EMC testing. Users can complete testing in just one test cycle, speeding up the design process and reducing costs. Higher Absolute Maximum Ratings (AMRs) provide protection, including reverse polarity, to reduce quality issues due to electrical overstress and to meet various OEM requirements.

Compliant with ISO26262 ASIL B, these devices meet the design requirements for functional safety actuators and sensors to ensure safe vehicle operation. In addition to the single-chip version, the MLX9042x is also available in a dual-chip version for applications requiring greater security and reliability.

Another key advantage of the MLX9042x family is the 160°C operating temperature. This high temperature capability enables position sensing in high temperature environments, such as small engine compartments or environments with increased heat penetration due to start-stop.

The MLX9042x devices from Melexis are AEC-Q100 qualified. Users can choose from SMD packages or SMP-3 and SMP-4 PCBless packages (where the sensor chip and EMC capacitors are integrated in the same mold).

Sample supply:

MLX90421/22: Available in SOIC-8/TSSOP-16/DMP-4/SMP-3/SMP-4 package.

MLX90425/26: Available in SOIC-8/SMP-3 package - more packages will be available in the future.

MLX90423: Will be available for order in November 2022.

The MLX90423, MLX90425 and MLX90426 sensor chips suppress stray magnetic fields (up to 5mT or 4000A/m) in rotary and linear position sensing applications.

"This series is an optimized version of the MLX9036x family, cost optimized but retaining all core functionality. Additionally, we have improved functional safety, electromagnetic compatibility, operating temperature range and stray field immunity," Melexis Global Marketing of Position Sensor Chips Manager Dieter Verstreken said. "Our ability to provide our customers with the features they need at an affordable price gives us a distinct advantage over the competition."
