Micron Introduces DDR5 Server DRAM to Data Center Customers

Technology Cover
Post Date: 2022-07-07, Micron Technology Inc.

Key advantages:

• As the number of CPU cores continues to increase, the improved memory architecture can nearly double the bandwidth compared to DDR4, thereby increasing efficiency

• JEDEC speed increased to 4800MT/s, 1.5 times faster than DDR4

• Support memory-intensive workloads thanks to module capacities up to 64GB

• DDR5's innovative architecture improvements and on-module power management functions help optimize overall system performance

Micron Technology, Inc., a leading provider of memory and storage solutions, today announced the availability of Micron DDR5 server DRAM to commercial and industrial channel partners to support industry qualification of next-generation Intel® and AMD® DDR5 server and workstation platforms. DDR5 memory products can improve system performance by up to 85% compared to DDR4 DRAM. Micron's new DDR5 server memory maximizes the performance of artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing (HPC), and data-intensive applications by providing higher CPU computing power and memory bandwidth not available with DDR4 technology.

"As data volumes continue to grow exponentially, the ability to turn data into insights is critical to business success," said Teresa Kelley, vice president and general manager of Micron's Commercial Products Group. Advances in processor technology to maximize platform performance. Micron DDR5 server DRAM provides massive bandwidth to help manage the most memory-intensive applications. Micron has always been at the forefront of DDR5 memory technology development, leading the industry’s transition to DDR5 memory technology, and Committed to supporting data center customers and channel partners in qualifying and preparing for server DDR5 DRAM."

As a global memory industry leader, Micron has partnered with the Electronic Components Industry Council (JEDEC) to establish the DDR5 specification from the beginning, and has established the DDR5 specification through the Micron DDR5 Technology Enablement Program (TEP), the industry's only DDR5 ecosystem. The enablement program promotes early DDR5 qualification to a broad range of market segments. Currently, the Micron DDR5 Technology Enablement Program has attracted more than 400 members from more than 160 companies around the world to help partners simplify DDR5 memory designs and address integration challenges. All Micron server DDR5 DRAMs are optimized for next-generation product families and are module and particle tested to meet mission-critical server standards.

Servers with DDR5 memory modules are currently being evaluated and tested in data center environments, with adoption expected to accelerate in the second half of 2022. The initial data transfer rate of DDR5 is 4800MT/s, and it is expected to further increase in the future to better meet the needs of future data center workloads. Micron DDR5 server memory products are immediately available to customers through Micron's global commercial and industrial channel partners.
