Novel high temperature automotive polymer chip capacitor

Technology Cover
Post Date: 2021-12-02, AVX Corporation

The new TCO series, released by AVX, is a high-temperature automotive polymer chip capacitor rated for operating temperatures up to 150 ° C, meeting the requirements of aEC-Q200 passive device pressure test qualification at class voltage, ensuring 85 ° C, 85% relative humidity, and rated voltage up to 1000 hours. The series also displays low DCL (0.1CV) and basic reliability at 85℃ and rated voltage of 1% / 1000 hours, 0.1 ohm /V series impedance and 60% confidence, making it ideal for high temperature, low and medium power automotive, industrial and telecommunications applications. Based on the TCQ series of automotive polymer capacitors, the new series of chip capacitors are manufactured in an IATF-16949 certified plant and feature a robust J-lead structure consisting of tantalum anodes, Ta2O5 media and conductive polymer electrodes that display a benign failure mode under recommended service conditions.

Ideal applications include automotive cab control, infotainment and comfort systems; Manage body electronics for safety, power management and diagnostic systems; And aftermarket electronics such as radar detectors, dashcams, navigation systems, amplifiers, subwoofers and headrest monitors; And dC-DC converters and coupling/decoupling circuits in industrial and telecommunications equipment. These capacitors are currently offered as D-Case (EIA Metric 7343-31) components rated MSL 3 according to J-STD-020 with tolerance of 10µF ±20%, 50VDC at 105C, up to 50µA DCL, The maximum ESR is 150mOhm at 100kHz, and the operating temperature range is from -55C to +150C, with several other codes under active development. They are also RoHS compliant, lead-free compliant, and able to withstand three reflux cycles of 260C.

Allen Mayar, Global Product Manager, AVX Electrolytic Capacitors, said: "The polymer capacitor family meets the stringent requirements of the AEC-Q200 vehicle, thanks to superior material selection, design decisions and manufacturing processes, while the new TCO family offers the additional advantage of 150C operating at class voltages. "The new TCO series of high temperature automotive grade polymer chip capacitors is based on our TCQ series of automotive polymer capacitors, which have now had field proven success for over five years."
