Power Integrations, a well-known company in the field of high-voltage integrated circuit high-efficiency power conversion, today announced a new addition to the InnoSwitch™ 4-CZ series of high-frequency, zero-voltage switching (ZVS) flyback switch ICs. When paired with Power Integrations' ClampZero™ Active Clamp ICs or the recently released HiperPFS™-5 GaN Power Factor Correction ICs, the new ICs easily comply with the latest USB PD 3.1 standard to design adapters up to 220W and charger.

"Business travelers need lightweight, compact, and powerful adapters that can quickly charge all of their important devices. With the new InnoSwitch4-CZ and ClampZero ICs further extending the power envelope, charger/adapter design engineers can easily design USB PD 3.1 compliant Standard single-output and multi-output power supplies, and enable power density to easily exceed 23W per cubic inch." Edward Ong, senior product marketing manager at Power Integrations, said, "Even at 220W output power, the high efficiency of this series maximizes Minimizes heat generation; bulky heat sinks are not required for any active device. Maximum switching frequency up to 140kHz reduces transformer size, and high integration allows nearly halving the number of passive components, MOSFETs and diodes, Excessive component counts make PCB layout compliance to safety standards challenging.”

Housed in an ultra-thin InSOP™-24D package, the InnoSwitch4-CZ IC integrates a rugged 750V PowiGaN™ primary switch, active clamp drive and synchronous rectification. Secondary-side sensing is implemented using Power Integrations' FluxLink™ high-speed communication technology, which provides excellent CV/CC accuracy.

Ong added: “The use of non-complementary mode active clamps allows the design to operate in both continuous conduction (CCM) and discontinuous conduction (DCM) modes. This cross-mode operation allows the product to easily handle the application characteristics encountered over a wide load/input voltage range.”

The InnoSwitch4-CZ IC consumes less than 30mW at no load when the input voltage detection circuit is working. These ICs feature a comprehensive set of protection features, including auto-restart or latched fault response for output overvoltage and undervoltage protection, multiple output undervoltage fault thresholds, and primary overtemperature protection with latched or hysteretic response features .
