STMicroelectronics Introduces Low-Noise Low-Voltage Regulators for Energy Efficiency

ST's LD56020 200mA low-dropout regulator operates from a 1.1V to 5.5V supply with low output noise, making it suitable for applications where stability and battery life are critical.

Competitively priced, the LD56020 is ideal for mobile devices, vision sensors, and wireless connectivity modules with very low voltage drop of only 190mV maximum at full load and 25µA maximum quiescent current at light load. An external enable pin allows control logic to place the regulator in standby mode, reducing quiescent current to less than 0.1µA.

The supply voltage rejection (SVRIN) of the LD56020 is 90dB (1kHz, 20mA) and the output noise is only 8.8µVRMS (10Hz to 100kHz), providing a clean power rail for low voltage digital circuits. The circuit voltage can be stabilized with only a small ceramic capacitor at the input and output of the regulator. Reducing the total number of components required for the design minimizes bill of materials costs, which, combined with the regulator's 0.65mm x 0.65mm miniature chip-scale package (CSP), ensures a compact circuit area with little impact on printed circuit board size.

The regulator integrates protection features including short-circuit current foldback and undervoltage lockout to prevent excessive dissipative power dissipation in the event of a system failure, as well as thermal protection and an internal discharge channel.
