Silicon Labs Releases Wi Fi 6+Low Power Bluetooth Combination SoC

Technology Cover
Post Date: 2022-10-26, Silicon Labs

The SiWx917 series wireless SoC newly released by Silicon Labs is an ideal choice for ultra-low power Internet of Things wireless devices that use Wi Fi, Bluetooth, Matter and IP networks to achieve secure cloud connectivity. SiWx917 SoC includes an ultra-low power consumption Wi Fi 6 and low-power Bluetooth 5.1 wireless CPU subsystem, as well as an integrated microcontroller (MCU) application subsystem, security, peripheral equipment and power management subsystem, all of which are integrated in a 7 x 7mm small QFN package. Target applications include smart home, health and fitness, medical, industrial, intelligent buildings and cities, asset tracking, etc.

The wireless subsystem of the new wireless Wi Fi 6 plus low-power Bluetooth combination SoC consists of a multi-threaded processor (ThreadArch), baseband digital signal processing, an analog front-end, a 2.4GHz RF transceiver and a success rate amplifier. The application subsystem consists of ARM Cortex-M4 processor with FPU, embedded SRAM, flash memory, AI/ML accelerator and enhanced PSA-L2 certifiable security engine. The MCU integrated in SiWx917 SoC is specially used for peripheral equipment and application related processing, while ThreadArch can independently run wireless and network protocol stacks, providing a fully integrated single chip solution, which is directly used for various embedded wireless Internet of Things applications.

Wi Fi is still one of the most commonly used and well-known connection standards in the Internet of Things. It is very popular among consumers, and the industry estimates that by the end of 2022, there will be 18 billion Wi Fi connection devices circulating in the market. It is worth mentioning that users increasingly want to integrate all their devices and be able to control all devices from one center, ideally a single application, mobile phone, tablet or console. Therefore, the next generation of Wi Fi devices is expected to face the future of interoperability with the Matter protocol. Wi Fi 6 technology can help solve these challenges with new features such as OFDMA, MU-MIMO, beamforming, BSS coloring, and target wake-up time.

The SiWx917 Wi Fi 6 and low-power Bluetooth combined SoC of Silicon Labs aims to fundamentally reduce the energy consumption of the Wi Fi Internet of Things network, while providing more computing power, faster artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) and strong security to meet future challenges. We hope to provide device manufacturers with a single, fully integrated, MATER capable Wi Fi 6 SoC with high memory capacity, which can provide the ultra long battery life in this segment of the market, and can run all wireless protocol stacks and customer applications on the same chip to reduce costs, simplify development, and accelerate revenue realization time.

SiWx917 also supports Matter over Wi Fi in a single chip package. This helps developers use a smaller form factor to simplify design, reduce development costs, and accelerate time to market while meeting user needs, that is, controlling the entire IoT environment through a single application or device.
