Littelfuse has released the Xtreme varistor family. Using a proprietary powder formulation developed by the company, these new, smaller varistors achieve strong surge properties that help protect against damage, fire hazard and even catastrophic failure under severe conditions.

Varistors are specifically designed for home and building automation, large and small appliances, outdoor LED lighting, smoke detectors and fire alarms, smart meters, GFCI, AFCI and USB sockets.

Johnny Chang, Global Product Manager, Littelfuse EBU Passive Product Management, said, "Xtreme varistors offer numerous design advantages over many technologies currently on the market. "The combination of their small size, wide operating voltage range and high inrush current ratings will provide even stronger protection for your latest product designs."

The series has a number of key advantages, including small disc sizes (from 5mm to 20mm) that reduce component occupying area and PCB space required for circuit protection. They are suitable for products in the operating temperature range up to 125C. Their high surge energy and current absorption capacity as well as their standing ability extend the reliability and service life of the products. The series also meets the UL-94 flammability rating V-0, which ensures stopping combustion within ten seconds. The series is available in bulk, tape and reel packaging.
