Texas Instruments introduced the first multifunctional USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery (PD) controller, which integrates a port power switch and a port data multiplexer. The company states that the TPS65982 USB PD controller is the only integrated circuit (IC) that provides a complete power path, can operate as a single- or dual-role port, and supports multiple host and device power implementations. For applications requiring higher data rates, the TPS65982 can be used in conjunction with the industry's first USB Type-C crosspoint switch, 5.4Gbps HD3SS460. The solution can flip the USB connectors on both ends of the cable up or down, provide up to 100W of power, and support standby mode to distribute video from the host to the end device via DisplayPort. For USB Type-C systems requiring up to 15W of power, engineers can choose the TUSB320 series, which is the industry's first device to provide USB Type-C configuration channel (CC) logic and port control. These devices allow the system to detect the orientation of the plug and determine the appropriate USB specifications and mode settings for the end device. The USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface standard is popular in smartphones and other personal electronics, as well as peripheral devices such as computers and printers. With TI's new USB Type-C products, designers can provide the final device, eliminating the need for consumers to use multiple cables for various types of USB ports. Every new TI device conforms to the USB Type-C Specification 1.1 (Notice of Engineering Changes as of June 22, 2015) released by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), and TI has been involved for a long time. TI has been providing high-performance USB-compatible products for more than 20 years. Key Features: 1-A single USB PD controller provides power and data in multiple modes: The TPS65982 integrated PD controller and power switch provide power and data in several backup modes. The TPS65982 can be used as a single-role or dual-role port (DRP) power supply and can be configured to support data as a downstream-facing port (DFP). Upstream Port (UFP); or as a host and device, it is called DRP. 2 – SuperSpeed switches transmit video data with low power consumption: The HD3SS460 USB Type-C crosspoint switch can support data rates up to 5.4 Gbps while providing standby power of 40 µW-more than 50% lower than competing products-extending battery life. 3-USB Type-C CC logic: The TUSB320 series supports USB 2.0, USB 3.1 and VCONN, giving designers the flexibility to use these devices in multiple USB-enabled designs. The TPS65982 is available in a 6 x 6 mm MicroStar Junior ball grid array (BGA) package. HD3SS460 is available in a 3.5mm x 5.5mm quad flat lead free (QFN) package, while TUSB320 is available in a 1.6mm x 1.6mm QFN package. Engineers can use the evaluation module (EVM) to accelerate their USB Type-C system design, including the TPS65982-EVM (including the BoosterPack pin standard for TI's low-cost LaunchPad ecosystem), HD3SS460EVM-SRC, and TUSB320EVM. Designers can use the USB Type-C Dock reference design (TIDA-00630) to get started quickly. Engineers designing with USB Type-C can also find solutions, get help, share knowledge, and solve problems with other engineers and TI experts in the TI E2ETM Community USB Forum.
