Lapsi Health's Keikku Utilizes nRF5340 SoC to Enable High-Quality Medical Audio Streaming and Recording and Transmit In-Vivo Sound Data for Diagnostic Purposes

Digital healthcare company Lapsi Health has introduced an FDA-approved smart stethoscope for wirelessly recording and analyzing auscultatory sounds (internal body sounds) such as heartbeats.The Keikku Stethoscope can be used in both point-of-care and telemedicine applications.


The pocket-sized device weighs only 100 grams and can be attached to the patient's body to capture audio. Healthcare practitioners can then transmit the sound directly to headphones or speakers, adjust the volume by rotating the device, and start recording with two taps. The data is then transmitted over a low-power Bluetooth wireless connection (supported by Nordic's nRF5340 SoC) for analysis via the “Keikku” smartphone app.


Any abnormal results are displayed in the app and indicated by a change in the color of the device's LEDs. The platform also provides an overview of the physician's schedule and access to the patient's previous records, enabling secure storage of auscultation data while supporting case review, collaboration and teaching opportunities.

The nRF5340 SoC's network processor is clocked at 64 MHz and is optimized for low power consumption and high efficiency (101 CoreMark/mA). The low-power operation of the network processor allows the device to be used for up to 72 hours of continuous use on a single charge, which is equivalent to nearly a month of normal operation. nPM1300 power management integrated circuits (PMICs) from Nordic further extend the life of the device, improve charging efficiency, extend battery performance and reduce the need for additional power components.


The smart stethoscope is designed to benefit a wide range of healthcare professionals, including primary care providers, specialists, educators, students, first responders and mobile healthcare workers. Additionally, in telemedicine applications, Keikku provides “real-time” audio streaming for accurate remote assessments and secure auscultation recordings for team collaboration or specialist consultations.
