NXP Semiconductors Layerscape and Layerscape Access series processors have been selected by Compal Electronics for its new 5G integrated Small Unit (ISC) solution. These include smart cities and factories, enhanced indoor 5G coverage, and low-latency applications on public and private networks. The new solution aims to enhance 5G network density, provide high performance capabilities based on four-antenna configurations, and provide new 5G use cases.

The ISC solution provides the high performance required to increase network density while also providing the low latency performance that users expect from 5G connections. Because 5G signals decay quickly, mostly through walls or over long distances. Small cells are needed to boost network signals and extend coverage into indoor Spaces or dense urban areas.

JS Liang, compal vice president, said, "Our partnership with NXP enables us to leverage the high performance of Layerscape processors to help meet the growing demand for higher capacity and wider availability in 5G networks." "4T4R ISC solutions help mobile network operators and private Internet service providers realize a wide range of new applications and revenue streams."

The solution uses a Layerscape combination that includes a Layerscape multi-core processor and a Layerscape Access LA1200 programmable baseband processor. These multi-core processors offer a high level of integration and Arm 64-bit cores, while Layerscape Access programmable baseband processors offer unprecedented flexibility through a programmable engine for PHY/ baseband processing. Implemented through software-defined radio, the complete system provides efficient, scalable performance with data rates in excess of 1Gbps.

Tareq Bustami, senior vice president and General manager, NXP Semiconductor Networking Frontier said:"Partnering with Compal to create this new high-performance solution highlights NXP Layerscape's strength in accelerating 5G deployment,"  "This software-programmable solution addresses the challenges of 5G network enhancement, especially for smart cities and factories."
