With the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in large-scale data centers, the demand for higher-performance semiconductor devices in the entire market will continue to increase. This trend makes it a challenge to create high-power-density, energy-efficient solutions for smart, enterprise-class systems. To address this challenge, Infineon Technologies AG has introduced the new OptiMOS 5 IPOL family of buck regulators. The product family features VR14-compliant SVID and I2C/PMBus digital interfaces for Intel and AMD server CPUs and network ASICs/FPGAs. Housed in a 5 x 6 mm2 PQFN package, these devices provide an easy-to-use, fully integrated, energy-efficient solution for next-generation server, storage, telecom and datacom applications, and distributed power systems.

The TDA38640 OptiMOS IPOL single-output synchronous buck regulator can deliver up to 40 A of output current. The device comes with Intel SVID and I2C/PMBus digital interfaces, allowing customers to apply it to designs compliant with Intel VR12, VR12.5, VR13, VR14, IMPVP8 specifications without major modifications to BOM (Bill of Materials) information, and DDR memory. Infineon's TDA38740 and TDA38725 digital IPOL buck regulators are equipped with a PMBus interface capable of supporting output currents up to 40 A and 25 A, respectively. All three new devices are equipped with Infineon's proprietary constant-on-time (COT) PWM engine, which can achieve industry-leading transient response capabilities while reducing the development and design difficulty of product use.

With an on-board PWM controller and OptiMOS FETs with integrated bootstrap diodes, the new devices support efficient power transfer and a small footprint. In addition, they have the necessary versatility to operate over a wider range of input and output voltages, while simultaneously enabling programmable switching frequencies from 400kHz to 2MHz. Multiple Time Programmable (MTP) memory supports customization during design and high-volume manufacturing, greatly reducing product design cycles and time-to-market. Additionally, these devices offer digitally programmable load lines that can be set via configuration registers without the assistance of external components, simplifying the BOM. Infineon also provides supporting tools such as the companion XDP™ Designer GUI (Graphical User Interface) to allow customers to easily configure the device and store it in on-chip memory.
