STMicroelectronics has released two reference designs using the STSPIN32 motor control system-in-package (SiP) to simplify the development of industrial or appliance compressor motor drivers. Each reference design integrates a motor controller with a three-phase inverter to power the motor, as well as offline converters and auxiliary circuits, as well as a production-grade PCB design and motor control firmware.

The target application for the STEVAL-CTM011V1 is general industrial compressors up to 250W, while the STEVAL-CTM012V1 meets stringent home appliance energy efficiency regulations. These two plug-and-play reference designs easily integrate with the master control system, start the motors, and allow customers to fine-tune settings for optimum performance. The average energy efficiency of both reference designs is greater than 96.5%.

The core component of both reference designs is ST's STSPIN32F0601Q motor control SiP. This system-in-package integrates an STM32F031 Arm® Cortex®-M0 microcontroller and a very robust 600V three-phase gate driver. Microcontrollers support motor control algorithms tailored to the specific needs of the end application, and gate drivers are used to control the inverter switches. The companion firmware includes an efficient sensorless vector control (FOC) algorithm. The SiP is a compact, thermally efficient quad flat no-lead (QFN) package that meets stringent safety and reliability requirements for creepage distances.

The offline AC/DC converter in the reference design is a VIPER122 analog converter that integrates control logic and 800V avalanche tolerant power circuitry. Frequency jittering technology prevents the converter from interfering with other equipment, and inherently low power consumption and light load burst mode operation help applications comply with energy efficiency regulations.

The inverter stage of the industrial and general-purpose 250W STEVAL-CTM011V1 reference design includes six highly robust STGD5H60DF insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). These transistors are designed to maximize energy efficiency at high switching frequencies, allowing the use of smaller capacitors and magnetics. In addition, the low thermal resistivity of the package also enhances the reliability of the transistor, and the tight parameter distribution helps improve the parallel safety of the transistor in high-power applications.

The STEVAL-CTM012V1 reference design contains six STPOWER STD8N60DM2 600V N-channel MDmesh™ DM2 power MOSFETs. These transistors are ideal for high-efficiency converters, including zero-voltage switching (ZVS) phase-shift converters, combining high-speed, low-loss switching performance with low on-state losses.Production-level board design saves significant development time and avoids complex board layout and signal routing challenges. The compact board size of 11.2cm x 7.5cm helps the board fit the form factor of industrial and consumer equipment.
