NXP Semiconductors today announced the development of its NXP EdgeReady solution portfolio, adding a secure face recognition solution featuring a high-performance 3D Structured Light Module (SLM) camera and i.MX RT117F crossover MCU. This is the first solution to integrate a 3D SLM camera with a single microcontroller to produce the performance and security of 3D face recognition, thus eliminating the necessity of using an expensive and power-hungry Linux implementation on a single microprocessor, with the high performance typically 3d camera required.

The latest edgeready solutions allow developers of smart locks and other access control systems to quickly and easily add secure machine learning-based facial recognition to smart home and smart building products. The solution produces reliable 3D face recognition under a variety of lighting conditions, both indoors and outdoors, including bright sunlight, dim night lights, or other challenging lighting conditions that are difficult for traditional face recognition systems difficult.

Advanced livisection detection can be performed using 3D SLM cameras, helping to identify real people and deception techniques such as photos, imitator masks or 3D models to block unauthorized access.

   I. MX RT117F uses advanced machine learning models as part of the company's eIQ machine learning software and runs on its high-performance CPU core for faster and more accurate face recognition, resulting in improved user experience and power efficiency.

Similar to the I. Max RT106F MCU based EdgeReady solution for secure face recognition, advanced livisation and face recognition are performed locally at the edge, enabling personal biometric data to reside on the device. This helps address consumer privacy concerns while eliminating the delays associated with cloud-based solutions.
