Use Analog Devices, Inc. 's MAX30009 low-power, high-performance BioZ AFE to reduce the size and extend the life of your bioimpedance (BioZ) remote patient monitoring device. For developers of small, battery-powered, continuous wearables, the AFE on a Chip provides clinical-grade vital sign measurements for bioimpedance analysis for patient health assessment in health wearables and medical-grade patches.

The device is designed with low power consumption and has options to optimize use case power, thereby reducing the consumption of tiny batteries and thus extending the life of the BioZ wearable device. It reduces power consumption by 62 percent compared to its closest competitor, and increases the measurement cycle of body-worn patches and vital sign monitoring devices. The highly integrated AFE is also 30% smaller than its nearest competitor, enabling designers to reduce the size of vital sign measurement devices for greater convenience and comfort for consumers and patients. Many vital sign monitors, pressure monitors, chest patches, BioZ and wearable healthcare devices must use small batteries as part of a compact design that highlights convenience and comfort.

The device monitors the full range of BioZ modes through simultaneous I and Q measurements, with two (bipolar) and four (quadrupole) configurations. This allows flexible BioZ mode measurements and wide sample rate inputs to support a variety of medical BioZ measurements. A wider range provides a deeper understanding of patient health by measuring respiratory rate, electrical skin response and activity, bioimpedance spectroscopy, body composition and fluid analysis, cardiac impedance and plethysmography. Bioimpedance analysis devices are a popular and convenient way for healthcare professionals to measure body fat percentage and body composition, such as respiratory and cardiac impedance maps.

"Medical wearables save lives by measuring the health of millions of patients suffering from a variety of diseases. Through bioimpedance (BioZ), medical professionals and scientists have been able to access a new clinically meaningful physiological parameter that can now directly benefit consumers, including stress, hydration levels and early detection of cancer." Dr. Benjamin Sanchez, an ECE assistant professor and bioimpedance expert at the University of Utah. "In my research, I used devices like the MAX30009 AFE, which have played an important role in making BioZ monitoring more common for healthcare device designers and fitness consumers."
