Toshiba Electronics Europe Ltd. now offers a new three-phase automotive brushless DC motor drive IC that supports functional safety. The new TB9083FTG will be used in many automotive applications, including EPS systems and electric brakes, together with brushless DC motors.

The device complies with ISO 26262 2nd Edition and supports the highest functional safety rating of ASIL-D. Functional safety standards, including ISO 26262, are designed to reduce the risk of system failure, indicating that new equipment can be applied to the safest automotive systems, including steering and braking. To support this, the equipment includes ABIST and LBIST self-diagnostics and provides ASIL safety manuals and safety reports. The new device is a three-phase gate driver for driving an external N-channel power MOSFET of a three-phase brushless DC motor.

The driver contains three pre-drive channels for safety relays and a built-in amplifier for motor current detection (with six gain setting options) that can operate PWM signals up to 20kHz. Communication is through a CRC-enabled SPI bus.

The device is undergoing AEC-Q100 certification. It can work up to -40℃, maximum ambient temperature (Ta) +150℃ or maximum junction temperature (Tj) +175C.

To reduce the total PCB mounting area, the drive is included in a small p-vqfn48-0707-0.50-005 package with a footprint of 7mm x 7mm. The package includes wettable flanks as required for automotive quality inspection.
