The eSync Alliance and the Autoware Foundation have formed a joint working group to investigate how OTA updates and data collection can be optimally combined into the software stack for the next generation of autonomous vehicles based on their secure two-way data pipeline. Autoware is the first "all-in-one" open source software for autonomous vehicles.

"OTA updates and data collection can accelerate the development of an autonomous vehicle software stack, creating efficient learning loops that can quickly integrate real-time vehicle data to improve in-vehicle software," said Mike Gardner, executive Director of eSync Alliance. Integrating standardized OTA platforms such as eSync into Autoware's open source autonomous vehicle software will provide tremendous benefits to developers and end customers."

Autoware's open source software is becoming a key component in the development of autonomous driving technology. Surprisingly, the goals and structure of the eSync Alliance are consistent with what the Autoware Foundation brings to the table, "said Shinpei Kato, Chairman of the Autoware Foundation and board of Directors. "We believe this dovetails well with our recently announced Autoware Open AD Kit. The rigorous standardization of the entire software stack enables autonomous vehicle developers to quickly and efficiently build the body of knowledge accumulated across the industry."

The foundation is dedicated to building Bridges between corporate research and development and academic research to create strong synergies in developing viable autonomous driving technologies. And the nonprofit Autoware Foundation supports open source projects for self-driving cars.

The eSync software platform provides a secure two-way data path between the cloud and any number of electronic terminals in the vehicle. It can run across many operating systems and networks/buses to reach any ECU or smart sensor in the car, provide OTA software updates, and handle data collection. Using the platform creates new opportunities for vehicle manufacturers and tier 1 suppliers to enhance their products and add value to their customers.
